A Game of Tones
A fantasy concert for harp, voice and storytelling
Every imaginary world has its own music. Sometimes, all it takes is a few notes to open the door.
Game of Tones brings familiar music from beloved films, television series and games into the intimate and resonant world of the harp. Themes usually heard with large orchestras are reimagined for voice and traditional instruments, revealing something older, stranger and perhaps even more magical within them.
Guided by Swedish musician and storyteller Erik Ask-Upmark, the audience sets out on a journey through fantastic worlds and legendary landscapes – from Middle-earth and Westeros to enchanted Nordic forests, storybook valleys and voyages across the seven seas. Along the way, instrumental music and songs are woven together with tales of heroes, dragons, magic, danger and the occasional monster.
The concert combines well-known fantasy themes with traditional melodies, ancient songs and medieval ballads – the kind of music and storytelling that helped shape the sound and atmosphere of modern fantasy. Long-time enthusiasts will recognise old favourites, while no previous knowledge of fantasy is required to enjoy the journey.
At the heart of the concert are Erik’s voice and harp. Together, they can whisper, thunder, tell stories and conjure entire landscapes. The core version is an intimate solo performance with harp, singing and spoken storytelling. It can also be given additional colour with instruments such as bagpipes and the Swedish nyckelharpa.
For larger festivals, castles and outdoor events, Game of Tones can be expanded with additional musicians and theatrical elements. Depending on the setting, stage combat, fire performance and other visual effects can transform the concert into a full-scale fantasy spectacle.
Whether presented as a close and atmospheric harp recital or as a larger festival production, Game of Tones invites the audience to leave the ordinary world behind – at least for a little while.
